The State General Fund (SGF) budget has gone up $3.0 billion in 4 years (2021-24) reaching record levels. Reckless spending benefits no one but insiders and special interests. Kansas needs smart sustainable budgets that don't exceed the inflation rate and don't keep creating new programs endlessly. Our Constitution requires a balanced budget, so any increase in spending is ultimately matched by an increase in taxation. There are no "free lunches", and we have to ratchet down spending to spur economic growth.
Tax Relief for All Kansans
Every year I have served in Topeka I have voted for tax cuts. In 2019, 2020, and 2021, most of the focus was on extending the Trump tax cuts to the state level. This was fought endlessly by big government liberals. Success ultimately came. We then moved on in 2023-24 to passing tax reductions that eliminated the sales tax on food, income tax on social security, and reducing property taxes. This, along with a cut to income tax rates, saves Kansans $400 million annually.
Genuine Political Transparency
Since 2019, the Kansas Legislature has taken some basic steps to increase transparency. This includes clarifying the person (or group) who request a bill to be introduced and providing better public access to committee testimony and hearings. I continue to work to ensure final committee votes are public record and that we move to actual term limits so that legislators are more accountable to the voters.
Legislators who Serve and Listen
We need legislators who actively seek to represent the needs of their House District. This means keeping in touch with local levels of government, schools, churches, and other non-profits that represent the views and values of local citizens. I have learned in private business that good "customer" service is essential! I will continue to work hard to serve the 104th District!
